Who's afraid of the big bad refugee?

Okay... anyone who really doesn't care what I have to say about our governments forced detention of children (and well refugee's in general) should turn away now and read no further! Don't say I haven't warned you.

Newly crowned Federal Immigration Minister, the ubiquitous Amanda Vanstone (Ms Tents are a fashions statement 2000, 2001 and 2002), has made the kind of statement in parliament equivilent to 'if teenagers didn't have sex, there would be no teen pregnacy!' Whilst on the most basic level, this statement is true and cannot really be faulted as a statement of logic, as a practicle matter it is rediculous to imagine there could be any benefit in such an approach.

This is why I find Senator Vanstones response to Deputy Democrats Leader, Lyn Allison, so remarkably funny. When questioned over the governments role in the forced detention of children in imigration centres and the effect it has on their mental health, Senator Vanstone claimed the situation would not occur if people did not try to smuggle their children into the country illegally.

Okay, so there is the above statement is true. But the reason it is true is because the government forces illegal immigrants into detention for extended periods until they are either allowed to stay in the country or are deported back to the shitty country they have tried to flee. In what almost seems like a chicken and the egg arguement, Vanstone is trying to make us believe it is the fault of those entering the country for the detention of their children.

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT

This makes me incredibly mad. Not just a little miffed or upset, but really really really mad. If the government policy of manditory detention did not exist, how could these children be forced into these camps? Seems a little bit odd to me. Without the policy of forced detention, these children and adults, would not find themselves in a situation which can only be acquated with gaol.

Does our government truely believe forced detention is detering anyone from trying to enter the country? Because I severely doubt people in AIDS ravenged Africa or those fleaing political and religious persectution in Asia and the Middle East have full and detailed knowledge of the Australian Immigration Policy and the forced detention of illegal immigrants. While I'm quitely confident they are aware it may not be perfectly legal, what are their options?
